Trainer Confessions 6

Let’s take a minute and think about working out. A little bit of cardio, half-a**ing some abs and then maybe some “stretching” aka sitting on a mat texting — sound about right?

Well, you’re not alone. In a world of Cosmopolitan booty challenges and PopSugar 5-minute arms, it’s hard to know what you’re actually working. Five trainers from
The Denver Athletic Club confess to you the biggest workout misconceptions that they see in their gym from people just like us *spirit fingers.*

“MY SAME WORKOUT ROUTINE WILL GIVE ME NEW RESULTS. CONSTANTLY VARIED FUNCTIONAL TRAINING IS THE GATEWAY TO CHALLENGING YOUR BODY DIFFERENTLY AND MAKING A NEW YOU! IF YOU RUN A LOT, YOU CAN TRY A HIIT CLASS OR MEET WITH A TRAINER FOR SOME FRESH
NEW IDEAS!”
— Debbie Reiman

“CRUNCHES DON’T GIVE YOU ABS. ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN. IF YOU WANT A STRONG CORE, PLANKS AND HEAVY FULL BODY MOVEMENTS LIKE DEADLIFTS, KETTLE BELL SWINGS, AND SQUATS WILL GET YOU THERE.”
— Graham Olson

“YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN A FUNNY LOOKING BLACK AND YELLOW TRAPS HANGING AROUND YOUR GYM. TRX ISN’T ONLY FOR CIRCUS PERFORMERS. TRX EXERCISES ARE FOR EVERYONE! NO MATTER WHERE YOUR FITNESS LEVEL IS, TRX CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR FITNESS GOALS!”
— Rachael Zavalsky

“HOURS OF CARDIO DON’T NECESSARILY MAKE YOU SKINNY. YES, AEROBIC ACTIVITY IS GOOD FOR EXERCISING YOUR HEART AND BURNING CALORIES BUT STRENGTH TRAINING STIMULATES YOUR METABOLISM UP TO FOUR HOURS POST-WORKOUT. CARDIO STIMULATES YOUR METABOLISM UP TO AN HOUR POST-WORKOUT. EAT SMART TO SUSTAIN YOUR CARDIO WORKOUT, SO YOU DON’T USE UP YOUR MUSCLES IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING “SKINNY.”
—Caroline Bloomquist

“CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, LIFTING WEIGHTS DOES NOT MAKE YOU “BULKY” (WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF BULKY IS). LIFTING WEIGHTS AND STRENGTH TRAINING WILL GIVE YOU A STRONG, FIT VERSION OF THE BODY YOU WERE GIVEN! MORE MUSCLE = MORE CALORIE BURN.”
— Karen Richards
