Fostering Futures: Forward Steps’ Guardian Scholars Scholarships Give Hope

Fewer than 10 percent of foster care youth attend college, according to the Legal Center for Foster Care and Education 2014 report, and yet more than ever, the college opportunity is critical for their learning, development and healing – since the average work-life earnings for this population increases more than $480,000 than if they only graduated high school—signaling better quality of life and stability. With such a need for academic support, Forward Steps, a Denver-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing educational opportunities for foster care alumni, is now accepting applications for its Guardian Scholars Scholarship. Fifteen scholarships are available to foster care alumni, valued up to $6,000 (up to $3,000 per semester for unmet financial need.) The scholarship can be used for qualified school-related expenses like housing, transportation and books to attend the Community College of Denver (CCD). Founded on the premise that every person should have the opportunity to attend college, and with an eight-year legacy of monitoring and adapting to the needs of the foster youth community, Forward Steps is excited to launch the funding opportunity, providing candidates with the financial support and academic mentorship needed to kick start a positive academic career – and future.

LOLA Mexican Restaurant Welcomes Chef Javier Plascencia

LOLA Mexican Fish House will open its kitchen to celebrated Chef and Baja Culinary Pioneer Javier Plascencia from Tijuana, Mexico on Wednesday, April 27. Chef Javier will collaborate with LOLA Chefs Jamey Fader and Dave Query on a six course menu of Baja specialties paired with wines and tequilas from the region. Named “Baja-Diego’s hottest chef” by the San Diego Tribune in 2015, Chef Plascencia is internationally recognized as one of the forerunners of Baja-Med cuisine, a fusion of the culinary traditions of Baja California and the Mediterranean. His restaurants—including Mision 19, Via Mercado, and Villa Saverios—have helped revitalize not only the cuisine and food scene of Tijuana, but also the city itself and its distinctive culture.  “There is nobody like him in Mexican cooking right now,” said L.A. food critic Bill Esparza in an article in the New York Times. “He watches everything that’s going on in the food world, and he’s like this incredible sponge. He’s creating a whole new vocabulary of Baja cooking.” The dinner is $75 per person and reservations can be made by calling LOLA or online.

Pencils of Promise

Stuart Weitzman has partnered with Pencils of Promise (PoP) to share in its mission to create schools, programs and global communities around the common goal of education for all. With a focus on creating quality elementary education programs within the rural regions of developing nations, Stuart Weitzman will fund the building of three schools: one in Ghana, Guatemala and Laos.
